“a once in a lifetime movie for the intelligent heart”

Just when it seemed impossible to find a movie that touches your heart and makes your soul come alive, along comes the little independent movie Road to the Lemon Grove with the persuasion to make a movie goer laugh through tears.

Directed and produced by Dale Hildebrand and co-authored by Dale Hildebrand and Charly Chiarelli, the heartwarming comedy appeals to the core of what it means to be Italian. Road to the Lemon Grove is a charming and spirited film that makes every person with an immigrant story proud of their rich heritage and encourages them make their language and culture thrive. The movie confronts timeless, yet contemporary social issues. It seeks resolution through old-world wisdom, and finds answers by rediscovering familial roots — all with a sense of humour and heart.

In the movie, an old-world deceased Sicilian father tries to negotiate his way into heaven. But he isn’t allowed passage into heaven until he repairs his relationship with his son, and gets his son to reunite two family factions with a very long history of a bitter dispute over a lemon grove. It reminds us of the importance of reconnecting with our roots to better understand who we are.

Road to the Lemon Grove tells of the love between a father and son; love of the home country and all that it represents; the love of family; and a love that has been worshipped from afar – of the famous Maria Miosogno played by the equally famous Italian radio and TV superstar, model, and prima ballerina, Rossella Brescia.

Hildebrand has turned the immingrants’ challenges into gentle comedic moments such as when young Calogero played by Tomaso Sanelli, reads the sign Workmen’s Compensation Board as saying, “Workmen’s Constipation Board”. The dialogue in the film is generously laced with Italian phrases and when necessary, sub-titles are incorporated.

Starring Burt Young (Rocky), Nick Mancuso (Ticket to Heaven), Charly Chiarelli (Sicilian “Spalding Grey”), Rossella Brescia (Italian TV/radio star and Italy’s Prima Ballerina), Loreena McKennitt (Multi-Platinum Recording Artist) and Tomaso Sanelli (Titans, Cicada 3301).

Road to the Lemon Grove is the winner of the Cirs Award at the Taormina Film Festival for Best in Cultural and Social Achievement in Sicily; the Best in Italian-Canadian Cinema at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival; the Excellence in Performance Award at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and the Best Comedy Feature of Edmonton International Film Festival. Road to the Lemon Grove is opening in 17 Cineplex theatres across Canada on Friday, August 30, 2019. (LABOUR DAY WEEKEND)
