As a now well-established tradition, to end the events of its 28th edition on a high note, italfestMTL will present Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, opera in three acts on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on The King’s Jester by Victor Hugo. The opera has a plot, a main character of great dramatic dimension and at least two other important characters. But there is more, for the quartet in Rigoletto’s last act is, like Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor sextet, the finest vocal ensemble in Italian opera. Rigoletto’s infatuation rests on the amorous escapades of the Duke of Mantua and on the complicity of his jester Rigoletto, a hunchback. He made many enemies at court by his caustic wit and lack of scruples. Count Monterone, who has come to avenge the honor of his daughter, dishonored by the Duke, is greeted by the jester’s laughter and sarcasm. He curses Rigoletto who is stricken with superstitious terror. Under the artistic direction of Maestro Alain Trudel and stage design by Paolo Ruiz, Salvatore Sciascia and Gino Maniscalco, the festival will broadcast virtually this magnificent work of the Italian genius, recorded on the italfestMTL stage.
